Key knowledge for your career

The University of Greenwich’s accredited BEng Civil Engineering programme has a 96% overall student satisfaction rating (NSS, 2022) and is 2nd in the UK in this category (The Complete University Guide, 2022). A key element to the course is the opportunity to study a broad range of modules covering key areas in construction management and technology, engineering geology, hydraulics and soil mechanics and more. Students also have the opportunity to take up a sandwich year in industry during the course.

Upon graduation, Destiny Ojo was able to embark upon her career as Graduate Design Coordinator for a contractor in the construction industry, working within a design management team to deliver design solutions to clients. Destiny says it was studying the module Construction Management and Technology that was most useful to her, as she was able to grasp the many roles and responsibilities within a construction project.

For Hrithik Rathi, graduate and Graduate Structural Engineer, a number of modules have supported him in his role today performing structural design calculations and working with stakeholders.

A few modules I studied have come in very useful now, such as Structural Analysis, Structural Design, and Geotechnics.

Learn from experts and gain experience

Civil engineering students are in safe hands with the university’s dedicated lecturers, who bring with them a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Deborah Sims, Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering, for example, has been working with Professor Debbie Bartlett, Professor of Environmental Conservation, to take insights into sustainability and flora and fauna around highways to big conferences and events, including a Medway Talk in March 2023. Meanwhile, Carbon8 Systems, a spin-out company at the university led by Professor in Environmental and Materials Engineering Colin Hills, is helping to combat climate change through green technology .

There are also plenty of opportunities for civil engineering students to get involved with to solidify their learning and build their practical skills, from listening to guest speakers to joining field trips. A field trip in December 2022 saw students on the Water Engineering module carry out a site visit to a water treatment plant, while another group of third year civil engineers spent several days carrying out site surveys in January 2023 on the university’s Pembroke Lawn.

Upon reflection, I believe the most valuable aspect of my university experience was the opportunity to connect with other students, graduates and lecturers.

Exciting pathways upon graduation

For graduate Tom Carter, having a degree was essential to obtaining his role as assistant site engineer for a landscaping company, and then progressing on to becoming Site Engineer.

It goes without saying I wouldn’t have landed my job without my degree… Completing your degree is an amazing achievement.

The University of Greenwich is proud to have so many fantastic alumni of its Civil Engineering programmes who are thriving in their careers today, and the School of Engineering welcomes links with its graduates – Destiny and Hrithik have both been welcomed back as guest speakers at recent Open Days, for example. The university offers many alumni initiatives so that graduates can continue to be part of their university community and inspire the next generation.
