Dr Mselenge Mdegela MD, MMed, MPhil, SFHEA

Senior Lecturer in Public Health

Mselenge Mdegela joined the School of Human Sciences at Greenwich University as a senior lecturer in Public Health in May 2024. With a background in clinical obstetrics and gynaecology from Tanzania, Mselenge has undertaken several teaching, research, and technical assistance roles in public health - maternal and child health in the UK, sub-Saharan Africa, and southeast Asia.

He started his career as a lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences before working for Jhpiego – Tanzania to update the medical curriculum for HIV teaching for medical universities in Tanzania and Ethiopia.

He subsequently worked for the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) between 2011 and 2020 as a clinical lecturer and clinical research associate in sexual and reproductive health for the Masters in Public Health (MPH) and several diploma courses, including the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H). He performed key teaching roles, including course convenorship and director of studies, enablinghim to attain a Senior Fellowship in Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). Besides teaching, he led the implementation and evaluation of programs to improve the quality of care during pregnancy, childbirth and the neonatal period in low-resource settings.

Before joining Greenwich University, Mselenge taught public health at the University of Sunderland for undergraduate and postgraduate students. He was particularly involved in managing the undergraduate integrated public health apprenticeship course with students from the Northeast and York & Humber regions in England.

Apart from maternal and child health, he is interested in health workforce development, and he enjoys medical writing.

Mselenge teaches and supervises students in Global Public Health and Global Health Management courses.

Research / Scholarly interests

Has interest in reducing inequalities and improving the quality of healthcare for mothers and babies. His research in health workforce involved a 5-year follow up of health care workers to determine factors influencing their retention in Malawi and Tanzania.
