Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor’s Group, the Health, Safety, Sustainability and Wellbeing Board (HSSWB) is responsible for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of all employees and students in accordance with all relevant legislation and regulation. It oversees the development and implementation of the University’s strategic approaches to wellbeing, sustainability and safeguarding, and operates as the University’s Health & Safety Committee, providing a forum for consultation with students and staff.

HSSWB is supported by the following sub-committees:
- Biological and Genetically Modified Materials Safety Committee, which is responsible for overseeing the health and safety aspects of any academic work carried out in the University involving biological agents or genetically modified organisms.
- Health and Safety in Halls Committee, responsible for the implementation of the University’s Health & Safety Policy and Procedures in halls of residence.
- Health and Wellbeing Committee, which oversees the design and delivery of the University’s strategic action plan for staff and student health and wellbeing.
- Safeguarding and Compliance Committee, which oversees arrangements in the University to ensure compliance and best practice in respect of the Prevent duty; safeguarding; sexual violence and harassment and hate crime.
- Sustainability Management Committee, which leads on the University’s strategies, regulations, policies and procedures in respect of environmental sustainability and seeks continuous improvement of the University’s sustainability performance indicators.
HSSWB is also supported by Faculty and Directorate Health and Safety Committees, which are responsible for overseeing the implementation of the University’s Health and Safety Policy and procedures in their area.
