Quantity Surveying, HNC (London South East Colleges)
This quantity surveying course will put you at the heart of the construction industry, providing in-depth knowledge of building design and construction for a host of potential careers.
You will study a range of modules that will give you a broad and balanced knowledge of Quantity Surveying role within the Construction industry. You will develop practical skills relating to construction technology and sustainability, health and safety, quantity surveying, measurement, project and risk management, and much more.
This course consists of a combination of core and optional modules that provide appropriate training for employment in the field of Contracts Manager, Property Manager, Building Contractor, Project Manager and Construction Manager.
The modules have been designed to include a high level of academic and practical elements. Enrolment on the course entitles you to become a student member of the CIOB, RICS. The course is also recognised nationally and internationally by employers in the construction industry.

What you will study
Entry requirements
- 48 UCAS Tariff points from an IT subject or relevant subject. We accept A Levels, T Levels, BTECs, Access to HE and all other qualifications with UCAS Tariff points.
- Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment - Merit or Distinction
- In addition, you will need: GCSE Mathematics at grade 4/C and GCSE English Language/Literature at grade 4/C.
Equivalent qualifications may be considered. - Suitable applicants will be required to attend an interview.
- Applicants will also be required to be working in relevant employment.

How you will learn
Teaching
Learning takes place through a combination of timetabled learning and independent study.
You can view more information about how each module is taught within our 'What you will study' section.
Seminars and workshops enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You will also be able to meet your personal tutor. Timetabled learning may fall between 9am and 9pm depending on your courses and tutorials.
Class sizes
Class sizes vary by module. Lectures are normally attended by larger groups, and seminars/tutorials by smaller groups. This can vary more widely for modules that are shared between degrees. All students will have opportunities for 1-to-1 time with their tutors.
Overall workload
If you are studying full-time, you should expect the workload to be similar to a full-time job. For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of courses you are studying.
Each module you study towards this degree is worth 15 or 30 credits. These represent around 150 or 300 study hours respectively. If you receive 100 contact hours for a 30-credit module, you should expect to commit 200 hours to independent study to complete it successfully.

Students are assessed through a combination of assessment methods depending on the modules chosen.

Each course has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Some courses may also include 'practice' assignments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.
Feedback summary
We aim to provide feedback on assignments taken at the college and to release examination results within 15 working days.

You will be required to cover the cost of:
- Text books
- Travel to other sites - Where travel to other sites is required, this will be payable by the student
- Library Fees and Fines - Where students fail to return loaned items within the required time they will be responsible for the cost of any Library Fees and Fines applicable
- Printing and photocopying - The cost of printing and photocopying undertaken by students to support their individual learning are payable by the student
- Graduation ceremonies - It is free for the student to attend the ceremony itself. Guest tickets and robe hire / photography are additional costs payable by the student.

Academic skills and study support
We want you to make the most of your time with us. You can access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.
Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.
Do you provide employability services?
The University Centre has close links with various companies in the construction industry and benefit from the Employers Advisory Board that has established partnerships with representatives from across the private and public sector. This encourages employer engagement as the Board engages in discussion about technical content of curriculum and development of wider employability skills, the provision or work placement, guest speakers, live case studies, and workplace visits.
