Ramadan 2022

TLDRoffon

This year Ramadan will take place between 2 April and 1 May. The BAME Staff Network share about marking Ramadan and would like you to join their good deed activity.

Happy Ramadan KareemRamadan is a month of fasting and abstaining from things considered to be impure for the mind and body. Those partaking in Ramadan abstain from food, drink, and any impurities between the hours of sunrise and sunset, allowing them instead to focus on prayer and connecting with God.

The act of fasting allows the individual to understand the pain and suffering of millions around the world who live their lives in poverty and famine, leaving the participant feeling more grounded and grateful for all that God has given them. At the close of the month, charity donations during Ramadan are made and then Eid al-Fitr is celebrated with loved ones to mark the end of the holy month.

This year Ramadan will take place between 2 April and 1 May.

The Good Deed Activity

In Islam, the act of charity can range from simple acts of kindness such as holding the door for someone, forgiving someone, to donations. Therefore, to celebrate this, we are organising The Good Deed Activity this year; you will be given the opportunity to submit a short video and/or quote of a Good Deed you undertook during the month of Ramadan. The video and quotes submission will be compiled into a video and showcased during our Eid event to celebrate your participation.

“…To act justly between two people is a charity; to help a man with his mount, lifting him onto it or hoisting up his belongings onto it, is a charity; a good word is a charity; and removing a harmful thing from the road is a charity.” (Al-Bukhari, Muslim)

Ramadan is a period during the year that my heart yearns for leading up to the month and in the months that follow after its completion. The Holy month is a special opportunity for me to re-connect with my spiritual side; I spend the month reciting the Qur'an and implementing its teachings, reflecting on myself as a person, helping the less fortunate, strengthening relations, and appreciating everything I have been blessed with e.g., food, shelter, family. I also associate Ramadan with comforting and delicious recipes which you can find out more about if you view our Ramadan Recipe Book at the event!

Ramadan comes once a year and occurs on the ninth month on the Islamic calendar. It tends to be recognised as a time for Muslims to fast throughout the month. But it is more than this, we use this time to reflect, appreciate and feel gratitude to what we have been blessed with. Most of all, it is a time where we as Muslims strive to better ourselves as human beings.
