You’ll receive an automatic email confirming that your claim has been received. You may also receive further emails requesting additional evidence and/or information. Make sure you read all emails thoroughly and respond by given deadlines as they may be asking for additional information or evidence to support your claim.
We will then look at your claim to decide whether your circumstances are extenuating, if your evidence clearly supports your claim and how difficult or impossible it was for you to undertake your assessment. The final decision confirming whether your claim has been rejected or accepted will be emailed to you, usually within 14 calendar days.
If you have requested an extension, you should continue with your work and not wait for the outcome of your claim as any extension granted will be from the original submission date and not the date that you receive the outcome.
If you submit your claim close to the assessment deadline, we can’t guarantee that we can notify you of the decision on your claim before the assessment deadline is reached. You must decide whether to submit your coursework by the deadline or to attend your timetabled exam.
Please note that where your claim is either accepted or rejected, any further evidence uploaded to the EC system will be automatically acknowledged but it will not be considered. The accept or reject decision is the final decision of the EC Panel – if you disagree with the outcome then this must be done via an Academic Appeal as advised in the outcome email.
The drop-down boxes below explain the process for each outcome that you have received:
Accepted extension claims
You should submit your coursework at the earliest available opportunity and within 14 calendar days of the original submission deadline using the late submission link on Moodle.
If you submit your work by the extension deadline
Your work will be marked and the grade achieved will be recorded and used to calculate your overall module grade.
If you didn’t submit your work by the extension deadline
Your work will not be accepted and a ‘non-submission’ or 0 grade will be recorded against the item of coursework.
You can’t submit another extension claim for the same piece of coursework. However, if you have valid reasons why you can’t submit by the extension deadline, you can make a new properly evidenced claim for a deferral (provided you are within the deadlines to submit an extenuating circumstance claim).
Rejected extension claims
FIRST SIT
If you submit your coursework by the original deadline
Your work will be marked, and the actual mark gained will be recorded and used to calculate your overall module grade.
If you submit your coursework by the extension deadline
Your work will be marked, and the grade gained will be recorded. Pass grades will then be ‘capped’ at the minimum pass mark (usually 40% for undergraduate modules and 50% for postgraduate modules) and the capped mark used to calculate your overall module grade.
If you don't submit by the extension deadline
Coursework submitted beyond the extension deadline will not be accepted and a ‘non-submission’ or 0 grade will be recorded against the item of coursework. Your results letter will explain the options you may have to retrieve the assessment.
COURSEWORK DUE IN THE RESIT PERIOD
If you submit your coursework by the resit deadline
Your work will be marked, and the actual mark gained will be recorded and used to calculate your overall module grade.
If you don't submit by the resit deadline
Any coursework submitted beyond the resit deadline will not be accepted and a ‘non-submission’ or 0 grade will be recorded against the item of coursework. Your results will explain the options you may have to retrieve any failed items of assessment.
IF YOU DON’T HAVE AN ACCEPTED EC CLAIM YOU MUST SUBMIT BY THE RESIT DEADLINE – IF YOU USE THE EXTENSION LINK TO SUBMIT WORK AFTER THE DEADLINE, YOUR WORK CANNOT BE CONSIDERED BY THE PROGRESSION AND AWARD BOARD.
Accepted deferral claims
You will normally be offered an opportunity to retake the missed item of assessment at a time decided by the Progression and Award Board. This will be considered a ‘first attempt’ and no penalty will be applied to the grade. Your results letter will confirm the timing, which will either be during the resit period or in the next academic year as a repeat.
DEFERRAL CLAIMS FOR FIRST SIT ASSESSMENTS
Reassessment during the resit period
If you submit deferred coursework by the resit deadline or sit a deferred exam during the resit period
Your work will be marked, and the grade gained will be recorded and used to calculate your overall module grade.
If you submit deferred coursework by the extension deadline
Your work will be marked, and the grade gained will be recorded. Pass grades will then be ‘capped’ at the minimum pass mark (usually 40% for undergraduate modules and 50% for postgraduate modules) and the capped mark used to calculate your overall module grade.
If you don't submit deferred coursework by the extension deadline or sit the exam
The item of assessment will not be recorded and a ‘non-submission’ or 0 grade will be recorded against the item of coursework. Your results letter will explain the options you may have to retrieve the assessment.
Reassessment in the next academic year
Any items of assessment to be repeated it the next academic year on a deferred basis will count as a first sit with no penalty applied to the grade.
DEFERRAL CLAIMS FOR ASSESSMENT DUE IN THE RESIT PERIOD
For accepted claims for deferral for assessment due in the resit period, you will be offered an opportunity to repeat the assessment(s) in the next academic year as a first sit with no penalty applied to the grade. There are no further opportunities to resit assessments within the same academic year.

ASSESSMENT DUE IN THE RESIT PERIOD
If you submit your coursework by the resit deadline
Your work will be marked, and the actual grade gained will be recorded.
- If you have achieved a pass grade, the Progression and Award Board (PAB) will decide whether to offer you an opportunity to improve the grade - if they consider that the grade is of a similar standard to your other grades and will not significantly affect your award classification they may not feel this is necessary, it is their academic judgement. The higher of the two grades from both attempts will be recorded.
- If you don’t pass at the first attempt, you may be offered an opportunity to retake the missed item of assessment and the grade will not be capped.
Your results letter will confirm the timing of any opportunities to improve or retake the assessment, which will either be during the summer resit period or in the next academic year.
